16 Years And Counting

Well, more like 15 years and some change. On April 8, 2024, those of us still around here in Texas will be witness to something I've never seen before - a TOTAL solar eclipse. Yeah, we've had some partials here through the years, and partials are cool, I suppose. The best one I recall was back in the 1980s somewhere. I made the oligatory eclipse viewer with a shoebox, but the coolest part was that, although you couldn't see any change in the sun as far as looking up at it (which I don't recommend for long periods), even thought the sun seemed normal, the light was weird - diminished somehow. Imagine being outside on a sunny day, and the sun is as bright-looking as ever, and yet things are just.....darker than they should be. Kinda cool.

But this one in 2024 is gonna be a TOTAL eclipse. You've seen the cool pics with a black circle (the Moon) and bright halos and whatnot around it (the sun's atmosphere, corona, and stuff that normally is too faint to show up against the sun itself). We will see that here. But wait, it gets even better! The path of the eclipse goes directly through the Metroplex and northeast right over Paris, TX. Here's a map:

Inside the blue lines is the path of totality. This is awesome - normally Americans have to do some traveling to see total solar eclipses. Or we'll just get a partial one. But the orbital paths have aligned perfectly - this eclipse you can just walk outside and watch. If I have my UT conversions right, (-6 for standard time, -5 for daylight savings) then this one starts here in Paris about 12:26 PM, hits totality at 1:44 PM which lasts a little over 3 minutes, ending at 1:48 PM, then the partial eclipse ends at 3:05 PM.

April 8, 2024 is a Monday - I better think ahead and make sure I have that day off. And write myself a note to remember the eclipse in 2024.
